The Florida Trucking Association was incorporated in 1934, in Jacksonville, Florida when a man named Lewis Raulerson recognized the need for the trucking industry to become affiliated. Today, the FTA continues to play a vital role in the business environment of its members. The trucking industry continues to evolve and adapt to changes in transportation laws and policies, and in energy costs. Nearly 70 percent of freight by weight is hauled by the industry, making trucking the cornerstone of commerce in the United States. The FTA is here to be the dynamic advocate and resource for Florida's trucking and transportation industry.
For over 75 years, Florida Trucking Association (FTA) has been a dynamic advocate and resource for Florida's trucking and transportation industry.
The FTA represents the interests of its members, while promoting highway and driver safety, and a healthy business environment. To achieve these goals, the FTA conducts its business through six committees appointed each year:
• Legislative and Governmental Relations Committee. The Committee and its designated subcommittees are charged with making recommendations to provide guidance to FTA on local, state, and national issues affecting the trucking industry.
• Safety Education and TICOTH (THE INDUSTRY COMMITTEE ON THEFT AND HIJACKING) Committee. The Committee acts as a liaison between the FTA Board and the FTA Safety Management Council. The committee works to promote safety related educational training for the Florida Trucking Association membership through safety/educational seminars and programs. The TICOTH arm of the committee is responsible for developing and recommending effective plans to ATTACK THE THEFT AND HIJACKING problem. The committee is also responsible for promoting and actively supporting programs that have safety as a goal.
• The Insurance Committee. The Committee is responsible for recommending new insurance programs that are beneficial, necessary and cost-effective for the membership. The committee also provides consulting advice on insurance programs and policies.
• The Public Relations Committee. The Committee is responsible for developing programs to improve the public image of the trucking industry by implementation of special projects, supplying speakers for civic groups, and other worthwhile programs.
• Metro Planning Organization Committee. The Committee duties are to review the agendas, monitor and attend Florida Metropolitan Planning Organization meetings as they relate to truck transportation. There are 26 MPOs in the state of Florida, that have a voice in Florida transportation planning.
• Membership Committee. The Committee is responsible for membership recruitment/retention programs.
In 2009, FTA had a meeting of its Technology and Maintenance Council, whose activities are spearheaded Rob Carryl and Susan Barfield.

Florida's Road Team is the cornerstone of FTA's safety and public awareness program. Each professional truck driver on the Team is an example of trucking at its best — articulate, knowledgeable and dedicated. Each driver is selected for the Team on the basis of their safety record, leadership abilities, concern for the image of the trucking industry, and commitment to continuous improvement. The Road Team drivers take a few days away from work each month to speak to various groups about highway safety and the trucking industry.
